Das war der süßeste der Laute!
Sie sprach's, das erste Liebeswort;
Im Herzen nun trag' ich das traute,
Tiefselige Geheimnis fort.

Allein wo berg' ich meine Wonne,
Daß ich sie wohl behüten mag?
Dein Licht verhülle, läst'ge Sonne!
Verstumme, lärmbewegter Tag!

Weltfern sei meines Glückes Fülle
Begraben, wo sie nichts verräth
Und nur durch Nacht und heil'ge Stille
Des süßen Wortes Nachhall weht.

Tais-toi jour agité et bruyant !

Que ce bonheur extrême, loin du monde
Soit enterré là où rien ne le trahirait,
Et que seul dans la nuit et un silence sacré
Flotte l'écho des tendres paroles.
