Die Schwermut

Gewaltig bist du dunkler Mund 
Im Innern, aus Herbstgewölk 
Geformte Gestalt, 
Goldner Abendstille; 
Ein grünlich dämmernder Bergstrom 
In zerbrochner Föhren 
Schattenbezirk; 
Ein Dorf, 
Das fromm in braunen Bildern abstirbt. 

Da springen die schwarzen Pferde 
Auf nebliger Weide. 
Ihr Soldaten! 
Vom Hügel, wo sterbend die Sonne rollt 
Stürzt das lachende Blut
Unter Eichen 
Sprachlos! O grollende Schwermut 
Des Heers; ein strahlender Helm 
Sank klirrend von purpurner Stirne. 

Herbstesnacht so kühle kommt 
Erglänzt mit Sternen 
Über zerbrochenem Männergebein 
Die stille Mönchin.

Sombre bouche tu es puissante
À l'intérieur, figure formée
Des nuages d'automne,
Silence d'or du soir ;
Un torrent vert crépusculaire
Dans les terrains ombrés
Des sapins brisés ;
Un village
Qui meurt pieusement en de brunes images.

Et puis des chevaux noirs sautent
Sur la lande brumeuse.
Soldats !
Des côtes où roule un soleil mourant,
Vous répandez le sang riant
Sous des chênes
Sans un mot ! Ô mélancolie rancunière
De l'armée ; un casque rayonnant
Tinta en tomba d'un front pourpre.

Un nuit d'automne bien froide arrive,
La moniale silencieuse
Illumine avec des étoiles
Les os brisés des hommes.
