Vom mächt'gen Arm des Schlafs besiegt, [Entschlummert Sorge, Noth]2 und Pein, Das Zarte nur und Schöne fliegt Entfesselt in den [Freudenreihn]3. Doch seht! die Fluren sind vertauscht, Das ist die alte Erde nicht, [Ein Feengarten,]4 duftumrauscht, Voll Nebelschmelz und Zauberlicht. De toverbloem der maan, zij lacht En roept bezield, voor ons niet stug, In onze donk're aardse nacht Het liefdesparadijs terug. Door overmacht van slaap geveld, Vervlogen zorgen, schuld en pijn, Het teed're slechts en 't schone snelt Van boeien vrij door 't geestdomein. Maar zie, hier is iets vreemds gebeurd, De aarde heeft een nieuw gezicht, O zie, een zilv'ren tuin die heerlijk geurt, Vol nevelglans en toverlicht. De geest, van aardse lasten vrij, Omgolft verlangens droomhabijt. Verrukt door 't nieuw bestaan drinkt hij Des hemels volle zaligheid. Toch brengt met zang de nachtegaal Terug op aard het weke hart. Bij alle vreugde wekt zijn taal De diepste pijn, de liefdessmart.
