Wenn ich durch Busch und Zweig
Brech' auf beschränktem Steig:
Wird mir so weit, so frei,
Will mir das Herz entzwei.
Rings dann im Waldeshaus
Rücken die Wänd' hinaus,
Wölbt sich das Laubgemach
Hoch mir zum Schwindeldach,
Webt sich der Blätter schier
Jedes zur Schwinge mir,
Daß sich mein Herz, so weit,
Sehnt nach Unendlichkeit!

Doch wann [in weitem]¹ Raum
Hoch am Gebirgessaum,
Ueber dem Thal' ich steh',
Nieder zum Thale seh'
Ach! wie beschränkt, wie eng
Wird mir's im Luftgedräng;
Rings auf mein Haupt, so schwer,
Nicken die Wolken her,
Niederzustürzen droht
Rings mir das Abendroth,
Und in ein Kämmerlein
Sehnt sich mein Herz hinein!

Tegenstrijdigheid

Als ik door struik en twijg
Soms een smal pad bestijg,
Voel 'k mij zo wijd, zo vrij,
Barst haast het hart in mij.
Rondom dan in het woud
Rijzen de wanden stout,
Omwelft mij blad en tak
Als duiz'lingwekkend dak,
Weeft zich elk blad daarbij
Haast tot een wiek voor mij,
Zodat mijn hart, zo wijd,
Haakt naar oneindigheid.
 
Maar als ik dan riant
Hoog op de rotsenrand
Boven het dal daar sta,
Diep 't dal daar gadesla,
Ach, hoe benauwd, hoe bang
Maakt mij dan 't luchtgedrang;
Rondom mijn hoofd, zo zwaar,
Zakken de wolken maar,
Omlaag te storten, dood,
Dreigt mij het avondrood,
En in een kamer klein
Wens ik plots terug te zijn.
