 am hohen Saume des Gebirgs,
 von Dampf und Dunst ein fahler Nebel auf.
 Emporgedrängt dehnt er sich aus,
 und hüllet bald den Himmelsraum
 in schwarzes Dunkel ein.

Lukas
 Hört, wie vom Tal' ein dumpf Gebrüll
 den wilden Sturm verkünd't!
 Seht, wie von Unheil schwer
 die finst're Wolke langsam zieht,
 und drohend auf die Eb'ne sinkt.

Hanne
 In banger Ahnung stockt das Leben der Natur.
 Kein Tier, kein Blatt beweget sich,
 und Todesstille herrscht umher.

 una pallida nube di nebbia e vapori.
 Spinta verso l'alto si estende
 e presto vela tutto il cielo
 apportando una nera oscurità.

 Ascoltate, come un sordo brontolio dalla valle
 è foriero di una selvaggia tempesta!
 Guardate, come gravida di sventura
 la scura nube si allarga lenta, 
 scendendo minacciosa verso il piano!

Vanna
 In ansia presaga si arresta la natura:
 non un animale, non una foglia si muove,
 e tutt'intorno regna silenzio di morte.
