Mir ist's so eng allüberall!
Es schlägt das Herz mit lautem Schall,
Und was da schallt, sind Lieder!
Aus düstrer Mauern bangem Ring
Flieg' ich ins Weite froh und flink:
Da atm' ich Wonne wieder!

Da flattert aus der offnen Brust
Die Sehnsucht nach verrauschter Lust
Und nach gehoffter Wonne:
Die Winde tragen's himmelan,
Die Gräslein geben Fürbitt' dran,
Sich neigend in der Sonne.

Mir ist's so eng allüberall!
Es schlägt das Herz mit lautem Schall,
Und was da schallt, sind Lieder!
Aus düstrer Mauern bangem Ring
Flieg' ich ins Weite froh und flink:
Da atm' ich Wonne wieder,
Da atm' ich Wonne wieder;
Es schlägt das Herz mit lautem Schall,
Und was da schallt, sind Lieder!

Heading for freedom
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I feel so trapped!
My heart pulses with a noisy beat,
And what it beats out, are songs!
Away from the fearful ring of somber walls
I fly into the distance happy and nimble:
There I can breathe freely!

Then flutters out of [my] open heart
A longing for long lost pleasures
And hoped for delights:
The wind carries them heavenwards,
The blades of grass pray for intercession,
Bending toward the sun.

I'm feel so trapped!
My heart pulses with a noisy beat,
And what it beats out, are songs!
Away from the fearful ring of somber walls
I fly into the distance happy and nimble:
There I can breathe freely!
There I can breathe freely!
My heart pulses with a noisy beat,
And what it beats out, are songs!
