Hoch kopft ihr Herz, die Hoffnung spricht's: Bald soll sie Edens Palmen nahn, Denn lächelnd nimmt der Geist des Lichts Am Tore diese Gabe an. Und horch, von Himmelsbäumen ruft Kristallner Glöckchen Klang, sie lauscht Dem Läuten in ambrosischer Luft, Die her von Allahs Throne rauscht; Sie sieht die Sternenschalen blinken, Rings um den See des Lichts gereiht, Wo die verklärten Seelen trinken Den ersten Trank der Herrlichkeit. Doch eitel war der Peri Hoffen, Noch stand das ew'ge Tor nicht offen; Es spricht der Engel, Schmerz im Blick: Der Engel Noch nicht! Treu war die Maid, und die Geschichte, Geschrieben überm Haupt des Herrn, Liest lange noch der Seraph gern; Doch, Peri, noch währt der Verschluß Von Edens Tor: Viel heil'ger muß die Gabe sein, Die dich zum Tor des Lichts läßt ein!

Ténor solo Entendant le chant distant, s'élance La Péri vers le haut ; Elle apporte le soupir de l'amour le plus pur Comme don à la porte de l'Éden. Son cœur bat fort, l'espoir parle : Bientôt elle s'approchera des palmes de l'Éden, Car l'esprit de la lumière prend en souriant À la porte ce don. Et écoutez, des arbres du ciel appelle Le son de cloches cristallines, elle entend La sonnerie dans l'air au parfum d'ambroisie Qui murmure depuis le trône d'Allah ; Elle voit l'éclat des étoiles scintiller, Rangées tout autour des lumières du lac, Où les âmes transfigurées boivent La première gorgée de la magnificence. Mais, l'espoir de la Péri était vain, Encore, la porte éternelle reste fermée ; L'ange dit, avec de la douleur dans le regard : L'ange Pas encore ! La jeune fille était fidèle, et son histoire Écrite au-dessus de la tête du Seigneur, Sera lue longtemps volontiers par les Séraphins ; Mais, Péri, De la porte de l'Éden : Beaucoup plus sacré doit être le don Qui te laissera.
