Murmure immense,
Et qui pourtant est du silence.
Ouvrant à la clarté ses doux et vagues yeux,
La jeune et divine Eve
S'est éveillée de Dieu,
Et le monde à ses pieds s'étends comme un beau rêve.
Or, Dieu lui dit: "Va, fille humaine,
Et donne à tous les êtres
Que j'ai créés, une parole de tes lèvres,
Un son pour les connaître".
Et Eve s'en alla, docile à son seigneur,
En son bosquet de roses,
Donnant à toutes choses
Une parole, un son de ses lèvres de fleur:
Chose qui fuit, chose qui souffle, chose que vole...
Cependant le jour passe, et vague, comme à l'aube,
Au crépuscule, peu à peu,
L'Eden s'endort et se dérobe
Dans le silence d'un songe bleu.
La voix s'est tue, mais tout l'écoute encore,
Tout demeure en l'attente,
Lorsqu'avec le lever de l'étoile du soir,
Eve chante.

Het is de allereerste morgen van de wereld,
als een bloem die verward de nacht uitademt
op een nieuwe ademteug die zich golvend verheft,
wordt de tuin wakker, een beetje bleu.
Alles is er nog door de war en door elkaar,
geristel van bladeren, gezang van vogels,
herschikken van vlerken, het zingen van lucht,
bronnen die ontspringen, stemmen van lucht,
stemmen van water, een overweldigend gemurmuleer,
overduidelijk in de stilte.
Het licht toelatend in haar zachte wazige ogen,
wordt de jonge en goddelijke Eva
door God gewekt,
en de wereld strekt zich aan haar voeten uit - als een mooie droom.
Welnu, God zei tot haar: "Ga, mensenkind,
en geef aan al de wezens
die ik heb gemaakt, een woord van je lippen,
een geluid om ze te kennen. "
En Eva gaat erop uit, gehoorzaam aan haar Heer,
om in haar bosschage roosjes,
met haar bloemenlipjes al de dingen
een woord toe te kennen.
Vluchtige dingen, dingen die ademen, dingen die vliegen ...
Onderwijl vergaat de dag, en onaanwijsbaar,
net als elke morgen, komt de avondschemering, beetje bij beetje,
en valt Eden in slaap en zinkt weg,
in de stilte van een onschuldige droom.
De stem is gestopt, maar ieder luistert nog,
ieder let nog op,
totdat met het rijzen van de Avondster,
Eva zingt.

O dood, nevel van sterren, wek je onder mijn voetstappen! Kom, jij verzachtende golf die glinstert in de donkerte; Neem me mee in jou ontkenning Kom, sombere bries waar ik nog maar flakker als een vlam dronken van de wind! Het is aan jou dat ik me wil doven, me doven en me ontbinden, dood waar mijn ziel op hoopt! Sterke god die haar verwacht met liederen en liefdeblijken. Kom, sla me stuk zoals een schuimkop stukslaat in de branding, zoals een zonnebloem door de nacht ontbladerd, in schaduw uitgewist, in de ruimte straalt. En als een amfoor van goud, als een vlammende wijn en een goddelijk aroma stort mijn ziel uit in jouw afgrond, om te balsemen de treurige aarde en de adem van de doden.
