Zodra Damoetas Chloë ziet, Dan tracht hij met bedachte blikken Haar aandacht voor zijn leed te strikken; Zie hoe haar wang verschiet. Zij schijnt, als zij hem stil hoort klagen, Wel te verstaan zijn klagerij; En hij is jong, en mooi is zij; Meer hoef je niet te vragen. En vindt hij Chloë ergens niet, Bedroefd zal hij van daar weer scheiden; Maar vrolijk springt hij door de weiden, Als hij weer Chloë ziet. Hij kust haar onder duizend vragen De hand, en Chloë laat hem vrij; En hij is jong, en mooi is zij; Van meer wil 'k niet gewagen. Aan haar zijn bloemen nooit vermorst; Hij stilt dus daag'lijks haar verlangen; Zij tikt hem vleiend op de wangen En steekt ze op haar borst. Haar boezem wil met trots ze dragen.
