Edlitam, I keep Watch here at the window -- Already the fields about Are shrouded in dark night. Here I stand every night And sing a song -- And sing of that which mightily Surges through my heart. [A song ] of loving and hoping, Of joy and of pain -- The window stands open, The sound of my song enters it. The tones resound Into my beloved's house, Then my lovely one Pokes out her little head. She stretches forth her little hand And gives me my thanks -- The serenade is over, My singing falls silent . .
