Fragt die Mutter: „Wovon sind die Hände rot, du Mädchen?“ Sagt das Mädchen: „Eben pflückt' ich meine Rosen, und die Dornen stachen meine Hände!“ Wieder kam vom Stelldichein das Mädchen, kam mit roten Lippen. Fragt die Mutter: „Wovon sind die Lippen rot, du Mädchen?“ Sagt das Mädchen: „Himbeer'n aß ich eben, und der Saft, er färbte meine Lippen.“ Wieder kam vom Stelldichein das Mädchen, kam mit bleichen Wangen. Fragt die Mutter: „Wovon sind die Wangen blass, o Mädchen?“ Sagt das Mädchen: Richt' das Grab, o Mutter! Leg' hinein mich, stell' ein Kreuz darüber; auf das Kreuz schreib' dann, wie ich dir sage: Einmal kam sie heim mit roten Händen, rot sie waren von dem Druck des Liebsten.
