Туман серебристый ползет над рекой,
Природа объята молчаньем и тьмой.
Рыбак молодой близ темнеющих вод
Сидит и чуть слышную песню поёт..
„О, дева речная, ты выйди ко мне,
„Меня приласкай, расцелуй при лун;
„Я знаю, ты дух, а я смертный простой.
„Тебя утомя, утомлюся с тобой...
„В горячих объятиях я душу отдам,
„Но чудный разсказ ты поверишь волнам...
„Узнают они, как нема и бледна,
„Глаза закативши, ты страсти полна
„Со мной замирала, и долго потом
„Ты будешь вздыхать о свиданье ночном!“
Выходит русалка на берег крутой,
На берег, облитый приветной луной.
Что было, не знаю. На утро в пыли
Хладеющий труп поселяне нашли...
Обвит он был прядью зелёных кудрей
И жемчуга нити дрожали на ней.

The Water Nymph

Over the river a silvery mist creeps,
Nature is in the mute embrace of darkness.
By darkening waters a young fisherman
Sits and he ever so softly sings this tune..
“O river maiden, come to me tonight,
Caress me, kiss me passionately in the moonlight;
I know you’re a spirit and I am a mere mortal,
Consuming you, I will be consumed as well…
In passionate embrace I will give you my soul,
But you’ll entrust to the waves a fabulous tale…
They will learn that you, so mute and pallid,
Have yet eyes that with passion are filled.
I will be in your frozen embrace at last
And long you will sigh over our night-time tryst!”
Upon the steep river bank Water Nymph stepped,
A river bank bathed in welcoming moonlight.
What happened I know not. Next day
Found by villagers, a fresh corpse in dust there lay…
It was wrapped in strands of green curls,
And on them trembled strings of pearls.
