I encara que m’oferíssiu una diòcesi i em volguéssiu canonitzar, per tots els ornaments d’un bisbe, no deixaria de cantar i fer barrila. I si escollíssiu un palau per a mi, en lloc d’ocupar un tron, m’estimaria més de viure a l’hivern a la casa d’una jove i alegre vídua. No m’agradaria reposar en cap claustre, vull un dia dormir al bosc, i si em voleu fer un gran honor quan el meu petit vaixell arribi a port, ciselleu a la meva làpida aquesta crònica: Entre els de la seva mena, ell fou un marcgravi de la Senyora Música en els seus pròspers reialmes. Ell fou un viatger d’aquest món, per company tingué la seva cançó, ell fou un nòmada sense tenda, un músic i res més. Ell sempre estigué més alegre que trist i menà una vida austera, cantà molt, estimà molt, i per això que molt li sigui perdonat.
