Im Arm der Liebe schliefen wir selig ein,
Am offnen Fenster lauschte der Sommerwind,
Und unsrer Atemzüge Frieden 
Trug er hinaus in die helle Mondnacht. --

Und aus dem Garten tastete zagend sich 
Ein Rosenduft an unserer Liebe Bett
Und gab uns wundervolle Träume,
Träume des Rausches -- so reich an Sehnsucht!

O wundervolle Waldesnacht,
Geheimnißreiches Graun; 
Die Bäume sind in finstrer Pracht
Gespenstig anzuschaun. 
Durch dunkle Zweige strahlt ein Stern  -- 
Wie still ists rings umher! 
Kein Tritt, kein Laut;  --  aus weiter Fern'
Hör' brausen ich das Meer. 

Verstummt ist all der Sängerchor;   
Durch die Gebüsche wallt
Ein leiser Hauch, mir kommt es vor,
Als betete der Wald. 
Mir ist, als sollt' ich regungslos
Als wie ein Baum hier stehn,
Und stumm und still und riesengroß
Gen Erd' und Himmel sehn.

die Jugend leise zurück.

ist mir zu Schmerzen erwacht.

Wird es gut und rein.

Und so bringst du
Diese Erde,
Bringst mein Herz zur Ruh,
Daß es still und stiller werde,
Schöne Nacht wie du.
