Chansons pour Hélène, 1er recueil

Song Cycle by André-Marie Cuvelier

Naissantes, appelle à l'amour et aux combats;
mais en vain, car, de son sans rouge,
il teindra tes fraîches eaux,
ce rejeton d'une race lascive.

L'ardeur de la Canicule qui brûle ne peut t'atteindre;
tu réserves une fraîcheur aimable
aux taureaux fatigués du joug
et au troupeau errant.

Tu seras comptée parmi les fontaines célèbres,
puisque j'aurai chanté l'yeuse
qui ombrage les roches caves
d'où jaillissent tes eaux murmurantes.

Text Authorship:

  • by Charles-Marie-René Leconte de Lisle (1818 - 1894), "À la fontaine de Bandusia", appears in Œuvres de Horace, first published 1873

Based on:

  • a text in Latin by Horace (Quintus Horatius Flaccus) (65 BCE - 8 BCE), "Ad fontem Bandusiae", appears in Carmina (Odes), in 3. Liber III (Book III), no. 13

2. Le sommeil des colombes  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: French (Français)
Dans le cèdre, des colombes
se sont posées pour la nuit.
Longtemps hésitantes,
elles avaient tournoyé au-dessus
de l'arbre solitaire.
Maintenant elles vont s'endormir.
Comme chaque nuit, au sommet
de la plus haute branche,
un rossignol chantera.
Ainsi je berce souvent ton sommeil
de paroles d'amour.
Je crois que le même instinct
guide les colombes et les jeunes filles
vers les jardins où chantent les rossignols.

Text Authorship:

  • by Franz Toussaint (1879 - 1955), "Le sommeil des colombes", appears in Le jardin des caresses, no. 5, Paris, Éd. H. Piazza, first published 1911
