4. A kígyó és a ráspoly  [sung text not yet checked]

Egy kígyó hajdan egy órás szomszédja volt,
(e szomszédságnak nem nagyon örült az órás);
a kígyó jött,dehát étket nem rejt e bolt,
       nem is akadt harapható más,
csupán egy ráspolyt lelt, azt marta s mérge forrt.
S a ráspoly így beszél, – s szelíd, mikor az támad:
        „Mondd, mit csinálsz, szegény hóbortos állat?
       Keményet marsz, reménytelen!
       Bolondos kígyó, kis tudatlan,
       hát azt hiszed, hogy bírsz velem?
       Míg rólam, egy szilánk se pattan,
       minden fogad kicsorbul énbelém.
       Csak az idő fogától félek én!”

Ez néktek szól ma itt, silány, alantas lelkek,
ti semmire se jók, kik mégis marni mertek,–
       hiába minden mérgetek!
Hát árthattok ti, bár fogaitok kivásnak,
       oly sok szép alkotásnak?
Martok, de bronz, acél s gyémánt a műremek.
