Elle était si lourde, que tu ne m'écoutais plus !
Tu la berçais comme tu aurais bercé l'enfant 
qui serait né de notre amour, 
si nous avions pu nous aimer.
 Et je te regardais bercer l'ombre de de cette fleur immense.

Pour lui répondre, je coupai une branche de saule,
Et la chanson de ma flûte berça la nuit charmée.
Depuis ce soir-là, tous les jours, 
À l'heure où la campagne s'endort,
Les oiseaux entendent répondre [à leur chant, 
Celui d'un oiseau inconnu]1
Dont ils comprennent cependant le langage.

Sur ma flûte d'ébène j'ai joué,
pour toi, l'air le plus passionné que je connaissais,
mais tu regardais les pivoines, sans m'écouter.
Puis je t'ai donné une poésie
où j'avais célébré ta beauté,
mais tu l'as déchirée
et tu en as jeté les morceaux dans
le lac, parce qu'il n'avait pas de nénuphars, m'as-tu dit.
Je voulais te donner un merveilleux saphir,
limpide et froid comme une nuit d'hiver,
mais je l'ai gardé pour qu'il me rapelle ton coeur.
