6. Baum im Herbst

Noch ringt verzweifelt mit den kalten
Oktobernächten um sein grünes Kleid
Mein Baum. Er liebt's, ihm ist es leid,
Er trug es fröhliche Monde lang,
Er möchte es gern behalten.
 
Und wieder eine Nacht, und wieder
Ein rauher Tag. Der Baum wird matt
Und kämpft nicht mehr und gibt die Glieder
Gelöst dem fremden Willen hin,
Bis der ihn ganz bezwungen hat.
 
Nun aber lacht er golden rot
Und ruht im Blauen tief beglückt.
Da er sich müd dem Sterben bot,
Hat ihn der Herbst, der milde Herbst
Zu neuer Herrlichkeit geschmückt.

Lau schläft am See die weiche Nacht
Und hat im weiten Lande
Wald, Strom und Menschen müd gemacht.

Ein Tönen ist erklungen
Aus dumpfen Erdentiefen her
Und hat sich zart erschwungen
Ins Reich der Luft und tönet
Wie Harfen zart und Glocken schwer.

Wohin? Wohin?
Mich hat ein Ton gerufen
Aus dumpfen Erdentiefen her,
Führt über dunkle Stufen
Empor und sehnlich weiter,
Nun schwingt er aus und tönt nicht mehr.

Ein Nachtvogel rauschet
Vorüber und schlägt mit den Flügeln.
Schon schmilzt es über den Hügeln
Ins dunkle Schweigen, und rauschet
Und fragt und lockt nicht mehr.

Die erste Nacht, die wir genossen.

Stieg auf und bog den dunklen Arm
Um uns, und war so laß und warm.
Du streiftest still von deinem Schoße
Die Blätter einer Purpurrose.
