Fünf Lieder nach Hermann Hesse

Song Cycle by Peter Escher (1915 - 2008)

1. Bitte
 (Sung text)

Text Authorship:

  • by Hermann Hesse (1877 - 1962), "Bitte", written 1901

2. Über die Felder
 (Sung text)

Language: German (Deutsch)
Über den Himmel Wolken ziehn,
Über die Felder geht der Wind,
Über die Felder wandert
Meiner Mutter verlorenes Kind.

Über die Straße Blätter wehn,
Über den Bäumen Vögel schrein --
Irgendwo über den Bergen
Muß meine ferne Heimat sein.

Text Authorship:

  • by Hermann Hesse (1877 - 1962), "Über die Felder ...", written 1900

2. Sommernacht
 (Sung text)

Language: German (Deutsch)
Die Bäume tropfen vom Gewitterguß,
Im nassen Land glänzt Mondlicht kühl vertraut,
Vom Tal herauf der unsichtbare Fluß
Tönt dunkel her mit ruhelosem Laut.

Jetzt im Gehöfte schlagen Hunde an --
O Sommernacht und halbverhangene Sterne,
Wie reißt es mir auf eurer bleichen Bahn
Das Herz hinaus in Reiserausch und Ferne!

Text Authorship:

  • by Hermann Hesse (1877 - 1962), "Sommernacht", subtitle: "(1918)", written 1918

4. Wintertag
 (Sung text)

Language: German (Deutsch)
O wie schön das Licht
Heut im Schnee verblüht,
O wie zart die rosige Ferne glüht! --
Aber Sommer, Sommer ist es nicht.

Du, zu der mein Lied allstündlich spricht,
Ferne Brautgestalt,
O wie zart mir deine Freundschaft strahlt! --
Aber Liebe, Liebe ist es nicht.

Lang muß Mondschein der Freundschaft blühn,
Lange muß ich stehn im Schnee,
Bis einst du und Himmel, Berg und See
Tief im Sommerbrand der Liebe glühn.

Text Authorship:

  • by Hermann Hesse (1877 - 1962), "Wintertag", written c1919, appears in Gedichte des Malers, no. 10

5. Schlaflosigkeit
 (Sung text)

Language: German (Deutsch)
Ich kann nicht schlafen. Das Sternenlicht
Macht alle Fenster blau. Die Nacht
Schaut mir so furchtbar ins Gesicht
Und wacht, und wacht.

Die Stunden gehen ohne Sinn
Hinab, hinweg ins andere Land,
An dessen namenlosen Strand
Ich bald auch bin.

Morgen, morgen, da will mein Herz
Wieder leben und unbedacht
Sich erlaben an Lust und Schmerz
Bis in die Nacht.

Morgen, ach, da leb ich nicht mehr,
Da bin ich drüben am bleichen Strand;
Schlummer winkt mir von ferne her,
Vom anderen Land.

Text Authorship:

  • by Hermann Hesse (1877 - 1962), "Schlaflosigkeit", written 1907, appears in Unterwegs, in Schlaflosigkeit, no. 2, first published 1911
