Nun der Tag mich müd gemacht,
Soll mein sehnliches Verlangen
Freundlich die gestirnte Nacht
Wie ein müdes Kind empfangen. 

Hände, laßt von allem Tun,
Stirn vergiß du alles Denken,
Alle meine Sinne nun
Wollen sich in Schlummer senken. 

Und die Seele unbewacht
Will in freien Flügen schweben,
Um im Zauberkreis der Nacht
Tief und tausendfach zu leben.

Waldränder glühen golden,
Ich geh den Weg allein,
Den ich mit meiner Holden
So vielmal ging zu zwein.

In diesen guten Tagen
Zerfließt mir Glück und Leid,
Daran ich lang getragen,
In Duft und Ferne weit.

Die Bauernkinder springen
Im Heidefeuerrauch;
Da heb ich an zu singen
Wie alle anderen Kinder auch.

Immer bin ich ohne Ziel gegangen,
Wollte nie zu einer Rast gelangen,
Meine Wege schienen ohne Ende. 

Endlich sah ich, daß ich nur im Kreise
Wanderte, und wurde müd der Reise. 
Jener Tag war meines Lebens Wende. 

Zögernd geh ich nun dem Ziel entgegen,
Denn ich weiß: auf allen meinen Wegen
Steht der Tod und bietet mir die Hände.
