So scheiden wir mit Sang und Klang:
  Leb wohl, du schöner Wald!
Mit deinem kühlen Schatten,
Mit deinen grünen Matten,
  Du süßer Aufenthalt!

Wir singen auf dem Heimweg noch
  Ein Lied der Dankbarkeit:
Lad' ein wie heut' uns wieder
Auf Laubesduft und Lieder
  Zur schönen Maienzeit!

Schaut hin! von fern noch hört's der Wald
  In seiner Abendruh;
Die Wipfel möcht' er neigen,
Er rauschet mit den Zweigen,
  Lebt wohl! ruft er uns zu.

So ziehn wir Jäger aus,

Hilft nichts! wir Jäger ziehen fort,
Trarah, trarah mit Hörnerschall 
In Feld und Wald hinaus.

Trarah! trarah! das gilt jetzt nicht
Dem Wild in Wald und Flur;
Den Feind verfolgen wir allein 
Und suchen seine Spur.
Der Feind ist hier! der Feind ist dort! 
Legt an! piff, paff! und jagt ihn fort!

Margret, ein Schöpplein Wein!
Ich mach' auch Wein noch Gold und Geld,
potz Velten! noch die ganze Welt,

He, reiß den Zeiger von der Uhr!
Was kümmert uns die Zeit?
Lass laufen, was nicht bleiben kann!
