2. Zalige wereld

Op 's levens zee drijf 'k op en neer, Ik zit gezellig in mijn boot, Geen doel, geen roer, maar heen en weer, Hoe de stroming trekt, hoe de wind maar loopt. Een betoverend eiland zoekt de waan, Maar zo één, dat ontbreekt. Leg maar vertrouwvol overal aan, Wáár maar water op aarde breekt.

»Wie klag' ich's aus Das Sterbegefühl, Das auflösend Durch die Glieder rinnt? Wie sing' ich's aus Das Werdegefühl, Das erlösend Dich, o Geist, anweht?« Er klagt', er sang Vernichtungsbang, Verklärungsfroh, Bis das Leben floh. Das bedeutet des Schwanen Gesang!

“Hoe klaag ik ‘t uit, Het stervensgevoel, Dat ontbindend Door mijn leden stroomt? Hoe zing ik ‘t uit, Het wordensgevoel, Dat verlossend Jou, o geest, aanvoert?” Zo klaagde zijn zang, Voor niet-zijn bang, Voorbij de dood, Tot zijn leven vlood. Dat is1 het zwanengezang!

In tiefster Erde ruht ein alt Gesetz, Dem treibt mich's, rastlos immer nachzuspüren; Und grabend kann ich Andres nichts vollführen, Wohl spannt auch mir die Welt ihr goldnes Netz, Wohl tönt auch mir der Klugheit seicht Geschwätz: »Du wirst die Müh und Zeit umsonst verlieren.« Das soll mich nicht in meiner Arbeit irren, Ich grabe glühend fort, so nun, wie stets. Und soll mich nie des Findens Wonne laben, Sollt' ich mein Grab mit dieser Hoffnung graben: Ich steige gern hinab, gestillt ist dann mein Sehnen. Drum lasset Ruhe mir in meinem Streben! Ein Grab mag man wohl jedem gerne geben, Wollt ihr es denn nicht mir, ihr Lieben, gönnen?

4. De wens van de schatgraver

In 't diepst der aarde rust een oude wet, Die ik gedoemd ben rustloos op te sporen; En gravend kan m' iets anders niet bekoren. De wereld spant ook mij haar gouden net, En ook op mij wordt kletspraat ingezet: "Je zweet en tijd, ze gaan voor niets verloren!" Dat mag mijn arbeid echter niet verstoren: Ik graaf volhardend door, ook nu, als net. En mocht mij nooit de vreugd van 't vinden laven, Moest ik mijn graf met al dit hopen graven, Ik daal toch gaarne af, en stil zo mijn verlangen. Dus laat met rust mij bij mijn naarstig streven, Een graf wil men toch wel eenieder geven? Mag ik het dan van u, mijn vrienden, niet ontvangen?
