Langsam und schimmernd fiel ein Regen, In den die Abendsonne schien; Der Wandrer schritt auf engen Wegen Mit düstrer Seele drunter hin. Er sah die großen Tropfen blinken Im Fallen durch den goldnen Strahl; Er fühlt' es kühl aufs Haupt ihm sinken Und sprach mit schauernd süßer Qual: Nun weiß ich, daß ein Regenbogen Sich hoch um meine Stirne zieht, Den auf dem Pfad, den ich gezogen, Die heitre Ferne spielen sieht. Und die mir hier am nächsten stehen, Und wer mich scharf zu kennen meint, Sie können selber doch nicht sehen, Wie er versöhnend ob mir scheint. 4. Pluie du soir

Lentement et en scintillant tombait la pluie À travers qui le soleil du soir brillait ; Le voyageur marchait sur des sentiers étroits En dessous avec une âme sombre. Il voyait les grosses gouttes briller En tombant à travers les rayons dorés ; Il les sentaient tomber fraîches sur sa tête Et il parlait en tremblant d'un doux supplice : Maintenant je sais qu'un arc-en-ciel S'étend au-dessus de mon front, Sur le chemin que j'ai pris Et au loin on peut le voir jouer. Et ceux qui se tiennent ici tout près Et pensent qu'ils me connaissent le mieux Ils ne peuvent même pas voir Comme il brille favorablement au-dessus de moi.
