Und wüßten's die Blumen, die kleinen, Wie tief verwundet mein Herz, Sie würden mit mir weinen, Zu heilen meinen Schmerz. Und wüßten's die Nachtigallen, Wie ich so traurig und krank, Sie ließen fröhlich erschallen Erquickenden Gesang. Und wüßten sie mein Wehe, Die [goldnen]1 Sternelein, Sie kämen aus ihrer Höhe, Und sprächen Trost mir ein. [Die]2 alle können's nicht wissen, Nur [eine]3 kennt meinen Schmerz; [Sie]4 hat ja selbst zerrissen, Zerrissen mir das Herz.

Se sapessero il mio tormento le stelline d'oro, verrebbero giù dal loro cielo e mi direbbero parole di conforto. Abendlich [schon]1 rauscht der Wald Aus den [tiefsten]2 Gründen, Droben wird der Herr nun bald [An die Sternlein zünden]3, Wie so stille in den Schlünden, Abendlich nur rauscht der Wald. Alles geht zu seiner Ruh, [Wald und Welt versausen]4, Schauernd hört der Wandrer zu, Sehnt sich [recht]5 nach Hause, Hier in Waldes [grüner]6 Klause Herz, geh' [endlich auch]7 zur Ruh!

A sera già sussurra il bosco fin dalle più profonde vallate, mentre lassù il Signore si affretta Ad accendere tutte le stelle. Laggiù in fondo è dappertutto silenzio, A sera solamente il bosco sussurra. Ogni cosa volge al riposo. Il bosco e il mondo stesso svaniscono, il viandante ascolta e guarda, preso da nostalgia di casa. Qui, nella quieta solitudine silvestre, anche tu, cuore, alla fine riposa.
