  Täglich ging die wunderschöne 
Sultanstochter auf und nieder 
Um die Abendzeit am Springbrunn,

  Täglich stand der junge Sklave

Täglich ward er bleich und bleicher.

  Eines Abends trat die Fürstin 
Auf ihn zu mit raschen Worten:
"Deinen Namen will ich wissen, 
Deine Heimat, deine Sippschaft!"

  Und der Sklave sprach: "Ich heiße
[Mohamed]1, [ich]2 bin aus Yemen,
Und mein Stamm sind jene Asra,
Welche sterben, wenn sie lieben."

Ogni giorno la bellissima 
figlia del Sultano andava 
su e giù all'ora del tramonto alla fonte
dove le chiare acque mormoravano.

Ogni giorno il giovane schiavo stava
all'ora del tramonto alla fonte
dove le chiare acque mormoravano,
ogni giorno diventava sempre più pallido.

Una sera si rivolse a lui
la principessa con rapide parole:
"Il tuo nome voglio sapere,
la tua patria, la tua stirpe."

E lo schiavo rispose:
"Mi chiamo Maometto e vengo dallo Yemen,
e la mia stirpe sono quegli Asra
che muoiono d'amore".

Ein Jüngling liebt ein [Mädchen,]1
Die hat einen andern erwählt;
Der andre liebt eine andre,
Und hat sich mit dieser vermählt.

Das Mädchen [heiratet]2 aus Ärger
Den ersten besten Mann,
Der ihr in den Weg gelaufen;
Der Jüngling ist übel dran.

Es ist eine alte Geschichte,
Doch bleibt sie immer neu;
Und wem sie [just]3 passieret,
Dem bricht das Herz entzwei.

Un giovanotto ama una fanciulla,
questa ha scelto un altro,
ma quest'altro ama un'altra,
e si è fidanzato con lei.

La fanciulla prende per dispetto
il primo brav'uomo
che incontra per la strada;
il giovanotto se ne accora.

E' una storia vecchia,
ma resta sempre nuova;
e a chi vive questa storia,
si spezza il cuore in due.

der arme alte König,
er nahm eine junge Frau.

Es war ein [schöner]2 Page,
blond war sein [Haupt]3, leicht war sein Sinn;
er trug die [seid'ne]4 Schleppe
der jungen Königin.

Kennst du das alte Liedchen?
Es klingt so süß, es klingt so trüb!
Sie mußten beide sterben,
sie hatten sich viel zu lieb.
