Eine Liebe kenn ich, die ist treu, War getreu, solang ich sie gefunden, Hat mit tiefem Seufzen immer neu, Stets versöhnlich, sich mit mir verbunden. Welcher einst mit himmlischem Gedulden Bitter bittern Todestropfen trank, Hing am Kreuz und büßte mein Verschulden, Bis es in ein Meer von Gnade sank. Und was ist's nun, daß ich traurig bin, Daß ich angstvoll mich am Boden winde? Frage: Hüter, ist die Nacht bald hin? Und: was rettet mich von Tod und Sünde? Arges Herze! Ja gesteh' es nur, Du hast wieder böse Lust empfangen; Frommer Liebe, frommer Treue Spur, Ach, das ist auf lange nun vergangen. Ja, daß ist's auch, daß ich traurig bin, Daß ich angstvoll mich am Boden winde! Hüter, Hüter, ist die Nacht bald hin? Und was rettet mich von Tod und Sünde?

1. Où vais-je trouver le réconfort ?

Je connais un amour qui est véritable, Qui est resté fidèle, depuis que je l'ai trouvé, Avec des soupirs profonds toujours renouvelés, Constamment conciliant, lié à moi, Le voici, qui avec une patience céleste A bu les gouttes amères de la mort, A été accroché à la croix et a expié mes fautes, Jusqu'à ce qu'il sombre dans une mer de pitié. Et comment se fait-il que maintenant je sois triste Et que je me roule par terre rempli d'angoisse ? Je demande : « Garde, la nuit est-elle bientôt finie ? » Et : « Qu'est-ce qui me sauvera de la mort et du péché ? » Cœur mauvais ! Oui, avoue-le seulement, Tu as encore accepté des plaisirs malins : Traces d'amour pieux, de foi pieuse, Hélas, cela a disparu il y a longtemps. Oui, c'est pourquoi je suis triste, Et que je me roule par terre rempli d'angoisse ! « Garde, garde, la nuit est-elle bientôt finie ? Et qui me sauvera de la mort et du péché ? »

2. Sur un vieux tableau

Dans un vert paysage aux fleurs d'été, à côté d'une eau fraiche, de roseaux, de joncs, vois comme l'enfant sans péché joue librement sur les genoux de la Vierge! Et là dans une merveilleuse forêt, ah, déjà pousse le bois de la croix!
