Dédicace Ces chants simples sont dédiés à la mémoire d'une jeune fille qui nous a quittés il y a longtemps, et dont le nom est connu par très peu de personnes. Et pourtant elle fut l'un de ces êtres les plus merveilleusement doués qui apparaissent seulement très rarement sur terre. Les enseignements les plus sublimes de la sagesse, exprimés ici avec la perfection poétique la plus grande, viennent de la bouche d'une enfant, et c'est dans sa poésie même que nous lisons comment sa vie, passée dans une obscurité tranquille et dans une pauvreté extrême, atteignit la félicité suprême. Seule une image approximative de sa nature peut être donnée par ces petits chants, choisis parmi plusieurs milliers, parmi lesquels seulement quelques uns se prêtent à la composition. Bien que sa vie entière ait été poésie, seulement quelques moments de cette riche existence peuvent être choisis. Si ces chants pouvaient contribuer à faire connaître la poétesse dans des nombreux cercles où elle n'est pas encore connue, alors leur but serait atteint. Tôt ou tard elle sera certainement saluée en Allemagne comme déjà il y a trente ans elle l'était dans le nord par certains, comme l'étoile brillante qui peu à peu sur toute la terre répandra son éclat.
