Im Schacht der Adern und der Stufen fahr' ich hinab, steig' ich empor, und meines Hammers ernstes Rufen lockt mir gehaltig Erz hervor. Es geht aus meiner Hand in andre, mir dauert nur der alte Trieb; was ich erwarb, wohin es wandre, ich frage wenig, wo es blieb. Nun sitz' ich Festtags hier im Tale, ein Goldschmied kommt, ein feiner Mann, und beut in köstlichstem Pokale aus Gunsten einen Trunk mir an. Und da mein Mund aus goldnem Becher die goldne Welle durstig schlürft, spricht er mit Lächeln: "Alter Zecher, das ist vom Erz, das du geschürft."

Nelle profondità della miniera e sui gradini, vado e vengo su e giù, e il primo colpo del mio martello chiama a me il metallo prezioso. Esso va dalle mie in altre mani, a me resta solo la vecchia fatica; ciò che io ho tirato fuori, dove vada, o dove sia, poco mi importa. Ora, mentre sto nei giorni di festa qui nella valle, viene un orefice, un uomo distinto, e mi offre nella coppa più preziosa una bevanda di grande squisitezza. Von meines Hauses engen Wänden wird mir ein Töchterchen gehegt, das herzig und mit lieben Händen, mein einzig Kind, des Alten pflegt. Das hat sich nun den Freund erlesen, grün Eppich, seinen trauten Stamm; ich selbst, wär' ich wie sie gewesen, hätt' ihn erwählt zum Bräutigam. Da bringt mein Goldschmied mir die Ringe, die ich dem jungen Paar bestellt, und feiert mit mir guter Dinge, ein Hochzeitsgast, der mir gefällt. Und als der Pfarrer nach der Weise die Ringe tauscht und Träne rollt, sagt mir der Goldschmied leise: "Die Ringe sind aus deinem Gold."

"Unser Herzog hat herrliche Taten vollbracht, seine Lande geweitet, gestärkt seine Macht. Und die Ritter begehen's, er stimmet mit ein, fortan unter Königen König zu sein. Und die weihende Krone hab' ich ihm gemacht, du zogst das Metall aus der heiligen Nacht; komm, Alter, nun ist uns das Schauen erlaubt, heut setzet er selbst sich den Schmuck auf das Haupt." Und ich sah ihn gekränzt mit dem leuchtenden Gold, seine Rechte erhob er wie freudig und hold, und er schwur sich uns zu mit dem teuersten Eid, unser König zu bleiben in Freud und in Leid. Zu Berge! Glück auf! zu Berge mit Lust, Gott segne den König! durchhallet die Brust, In die Schachte nun fahr' ich so freudiger ein, das Land ist des Königs, die Berge sind dein.

Es steht ein Kelch in der Kapelle, neu, goldig, hell, auf dem Altar; auch das Metall brach an der Stelle, wo ich gehauen Jahr um Jahr. Seh' ich es nun in Pfarrers Händen, und Alt' und Junge um ihn her, seh' ich ihn Gottesgnaden spenden, fühl' ich mich priesterlich wie er. Und wenn ich selber vor ihm stehe, das Sacrament in Sinn und Herz, dann blick' ich auf den Kelch und flehe: verkläre mich wie dieses Erz !

C'è un calice nella cappella, nuovo, d'oro, chiaro, sull'altare; anche questo metallo è venuto fuori dal luogo dove scavo da anni e anni. Quando lo vedo nelle mani del sacerdote, e vecchi e giovani gli stanno intorno, e lo vedo offrire la grazia di Dio, mi sento consacrato come lui. E quando io stesso gli sto davanti, col Sacramento in mente e in cuore, guardo il calice e prego: trasfigurami come questo metallo!

Als Weibesarm in jungen Jahren, als mich die Tochter weich umschlang, da trieb mich in den Schacht zu fahren der Arbeit Lohn und dunkler Drang. Nun schläft mein Mütterchen im Kühlen, selbst wählend hat mein Kind gefreit; ich kann nicht mehr wie sonst mich fühlen, mein Herz hat eine andre Zeit. An Erd' und Himmel mich zu binden, im Glauben meiner mir bewusst; im Einen mich, im All zu finden, das mein Verlangen, meine Lust! Und zweigt sich nicht mein Werk hienieden bis auf zum Throne, Ast an Ast? Ist nicht des Hauses stiller Frieden, ist Gott nicht in mein Werk gefasst? Ja, Gottes Wunder strahlen prächtig, wo gülden Erz in Tiefen bricht, und Gottes Odem wehet mächtig um Hacke und um Grubenlicht.

Quando una donna, negli anni della gioventù, quando mia figlia mi abbracciava dolcemente, mi spingeva ad andare alla miniera il compenso del lavoro e un oscuro istinto. Ora la mia mamma dorme nel fresco giaciglio, con libera scelta mia figlia si è sposata; io non posso più sentirmi come prima, il mio cuore ha un altro tempo. Legarmi a terra e cielo, nella fede e coscienza di me stesso, trovarmi nell'Uno, nel Tutto è ciò che desidero, la mia gioia! E se non vacilla la mia opera quaggiù fino al trono, ramo su ramo, non è la tranquilla pace della casa, non è Dio che è entrato nella mia opera? Sì, le meraviglie di Dio splendono gloriose, dove la pietra porta l'oro nelle sue profondità, e il respiro di Dio soffia con forza sulla zappa e sulla luce delle fosse.
