Von Languenau est au cœur des ennemis, mais tout seul. La terreur a créé un espace vide autour de lui, et il s'y tient, au milieu, sous son drapeau qui lentement se consume. Lentement, presque songeur, il regarde autour de lui. Il y a beaucoup de choses étranges, bariolées devant lui. Des jardins - pense-t-il et il sourit. Mais alors il sent que des yeux le fixent et il reconnaît des hommes et sait que ce sont des chiens de païens - : et il jette son cheval au-milieu d'eux. Mais, alors que maintenant derrière lui tout est détruit, les jardins sont à nouveau là, et les seize sabres courbes qui sur lui jaillissent, rai contre rai, sont une fête. Une riante fontaine.

Translation of title "Der Tod" = "La Mort"La tunique a brûlé dans le château, la lettre et le pétale d'une femme étrangère. - Au printemps suivant (il est arrivé triste et froid), un courrier du baron von Pirovano est entré lentement à Languenau. Là il a vu une vieille femme pleurer.
