Hatem
 Dies zu deuten bin erbötig!
Hab ich dir nicht oft erzählt,
 Wie der Doge von Venedig
 Mit dem Meere sich vermählt?

 So von deinen Fingergliedern
Fiel der Ring dem Euphrat zu.
 Ach, zu tausend [Himmelsliedern]1,
 Süßer Traum, begeisterst du!

 Mich, der von des Indostanen
 Streifte bis Damaskus hin,
 Um mit neuen Karawanen
Bis ans rote Meer zu ziehn,

 Mich vermählst du deinem Fluße,
 Der Terrasse diesem Hain:
Hier soll bis zum letzten Kuße
 Dir mein Geist gewidmet sein.

Suleika:
Als ich auf dem Euphrat schiffte,
 Streifte sich der goldne Ring
 Finger ab, in Wasserklüfte,
Den ich jüngst von dir empfing.

 Also träumt ich. Morgenröte
Blitzt' ins Auge durch den Baum,
 Sag, Poete, sag, Prophete!
 Was bedeutet dieser Traum?

Hatem :
 Je suis prêt à te l'indiquer !
 Ne t'ai-je pas souvent raconté
 Comment le doge de Venise
S'est marié avec la mer ?

 Ainsi de ton doigt
 L'anneau est tombé dans l'Euphrate.
 Ah ! mille chants célestes,
 Doux rêve, tu m'inspires !

 Moi qui des Indes
 Ai erré jusqu'à Damas;
 Et avec de nouvelles caravanes
Suis allé jusqu'à la mer rouge,

Tu m'as marié à ton fleuve,
À la terrasse de ce bosquet :
 Ici jusqu'au dernier baiser
 Mon âme te sera dédiée.

Suleika:
Alors que je naviguais sur l'Euphrate,
 l'anneau d'or a glissé
de mon doigt, dans l'eau profonde,
l'anneau que j'avais reçu de toi récemment.

Ainsi était mon rêve. L'aurore rouge
 m'ébouissait à travers les arbres.
 Dis, poète, dis, prophète,
 que signifie ce rêve?
