Ihr schmucken Dirnen alle, Nun Eine hat es doch, Und habt ihr's nicht gefunden, So liegt's im Grase noch. Und wenn es liegt im Grase, So liegt's auf kühler Streu, Und [wann]2 ihr mäht die Wiesen, So schneidet's nicht entzwei. Schnitterin. Ich hab' ein Herz gefunden Wohl in dem Mond April, Wo alle Narren wandern: Einen Narren ich nicht will. Drum will ich's weiter schicken, Bis daß es wird gescheit, Und kommt es klug zurücke, Zum Lieben ist's immer noch Zeit. Schnitter. Ich hab' ein Herz begraben Wohl im Dezemberschnee, Und wenn das Eis zerrinnet, So fällt es in den See. Reaper. I have lost [a]1 heart In the green May-time, And no one wants to tell me Where it has ended up. You picture-perfect maidens all, Now one of you must surely have it, And if you did not find it, Then it is still lying in the grass. And if it's lying in the grass, It is lying in the cool straw, And when you mow the meadows, Do not cut it in two. Reaper-maiden. I have found a heart In the month of April, When all the fools go wandering: I do not want a fool. Therefore I shall send it on Until it comes to its senses, And if it comes back clever, There shall still be time for loving. Reaper. I have buried a heart In the snows of December, And when the ice melts, The heart shall fall into the lake. And shall bob up and down, And hop back and forth, Until it has leapt into the net Of the most beautiful fisher-maiden. Reaper-maiden. I have caught many a heart In the harvest dance: Every year a fresh heartlet, Every year a fresh wreath! And whoever does not like that May simply watch the dance; That way he can keep his heart, And not wear out his shoes either.
