Der Müller.
 Wo ein treues Herze
 In Liebe vergeht,
 Da welken die Lilien
 Auf jedem Beet.

 Da muß in die Wolken
 Der Vollmond gehn,
 Damit seine Thränen
 Die Menschen nicht sehn.

 Da halten die Englein
 Die Augen sich zu,
 Und schluchzen und singen
 Die Seele zur Ruh'.

Der Bach.
 Und wenn sich die Liebe
 Dem Schmerz entringt,
 Ein Sternlein, ein neues,
 Am Himmel erblinkt.

 Da springen drei Rosen,
 Halb roth und halb weiß,
 Die welken nicht wieder,
 Aus Dornenreis.

 Und die Engelein schneiden
 Die Flügel sich ab,
 Und gehn alle Morgen
 Zur Erde herab.

Der Müller.
 Ach, Bächlein, liebes Bächlein,
 Du meinst es so gut:
 Ach, Bächlein, aber weißt du,
 Wie Liebe thut?

 Ach, unten, da unten,
 Die kühle Ruh'!
 Ach, Bächlein, liebes Bächlein,
 So singe nur zu.

Ο μυλωνάς:
 Εκεί όπου μια πιστή καρδιά
 Μαραζώνει από αγάπη,
 Εκεί μαραίνονται τα κρίνα
 Σε κάθε παρτέρι·

 Τότε πρέπει στα σύννεφα μέσα
 Η πανσέληνος να πάει,
 Ώστε τα δάκρυά της
 Οι άνθρωποι να μην τα βλέπουν·

 Τότε τα αγγελάκια
 Κλείνουν τα μάτια τους
 Και κλαίνε με αναφιλητά και τραγουδούν
 Για να γαληνέψουν την ψυχή.

Το ρυάκι:
 Και όποτε η αγάπη
 Ξεφεύγει από τον πόνο,
 Ένα αστεράκι, νεογέννητο, 
 Λάμπει στον ουρανό·

 Τότε ανοίγουν τρία τριαντάφυλλα,
 Μισοκόκκινα και μισοάσπρα,
 Που δεν μαραίνονται ποτέ,
 Μέσα από αγκαθωτά κλαδιά.

 Και τα αγγελάκια
 Κόβουν τα φτερά τους
 Και κάθε πρωί
 Κατεβαίνουν στη γη.

Ο μυλωνάς:
 Αχ μικρό ρυάκι, αγαπημένο μικρό ρυάκι,
 Τα λες τόσο καλά:
 Αχ μικρό ρυάκι, ξέρεις όμως, 
 Τι κάνει η αγάπη; 

 Αχ κάτω, εκεί κάτω
 Είναι η δροσερή ανάπαυση!
 Αχ μικρό ρυάκι, αγαπημένο μικρό ρυάκι,
 Συνέχισε λοιπόν απλώς να τραγουδάς.
