Reif sind, in Feuer getaucht, gekochet 
Die Frücht' und auf der Erde geprüfet und ein Gesetz ist,
Daß alles hineingeht, Schlangen gleich,
prophetisch träumend auf 
Den Hügel des Himmels. Und vieles 
Wie auf den Schultern eine 
Last von Scheitern ist 
Zu behalten. Aber bös sind
Die Pfade. Nämlich unrecht, 
Wie Rosse, gehn die gefangenen 
Element und alten 
Gesetze der Erde. Und immer 
Ins Ungebundene gehet eine Sehnsucht. Vieles aber ist
Zu behalten. Und not die Treue.
Vorwärts aber und rückwärts wollen wir 
Nicht sehn. Uns wiegen lassen, wie 
Auf schwankem Kahne der See.

Ils ont mûri, les fruits passés au feu, à la cuisson
puis goûtés sur la terre, car c’est la règle
que tout s’y dissolve, comme 
les serpents-prophètes qui rêvent
sur les hauteurs du ciel. Il y a beaucoup
à assumer, comme un faix de bûches sur les épaules.
Mais les sentiers 
sont difficiles. De même, 
les fondements et les anciennes 
règles de la terre,
assujettis, s’en vont à la dérive,
comme de mauvais chevaux. Et toujours 
s’accroît l’envie de s’affranchir.
Il y a beaucoup à assumer. 
Mais la fidélité fait défaut.
Nous ne voulons regarder ni devant ni derrière, 
nous nous laissons bercer, 
comme sur un esquif qui tangue sur la mer.
