Und wie er sitzt und wie er lauscht, Theilt sich die Fluth empor; Aus dem bewegten Wasser rauscht Ein feuchtes Weib hervor. Sie sang zu ihm, sie sprach zu ihm: Was lockst du meine Brut Mit Menschenwitz und Menschenlist Herauf zu Todesgluth? Ach wüßtest du, wie's Fischlein ist So wohlig auf dem Grund, Du stiegst herunter wie du bist Und würdest erst gesund. Labt sich die liebe Sonne nicht, Der Mond sich nicht im Meer? Kehrt wellenathmend ihr Gesicht Nicht doppelt schöner her? Lockt dich der tiefe Himmel nicht, Das feuchtverklärte Blau? Lockt dich dein eigen Angesicht Nicht her in ew'gen Thau? Su fışırdıyor, kabarıyordu, Suyun kenarında bir balıkçı oturuyor, Sükunetle oltaya bakıyordu, Kalbinin derinliklerine kadar heyecansız. Orada oturup oltaya göz kulak olurken Kabaran dalga bölündü. Hareketlenen suyun içinden Islak bir kadın çıktı. Balıkçıya şarkı söyledi,ona şöyle dedi: Niye benim çocuklarımı insan kurnazlığı ve hilesi ile ölüm ateşine çekiyorsun? Bilseydin ki balıkcıklar denizin dibinde ne kadar rahatlar, sen de olduğun gibi aynen böyle dalıp inseydin o zaman kendini çok iyi hissederdin. O canım güneş de ay da Denizde ferahlamıyor mu? Dalgalarla kucaklaştıktan sonra yüzü bir o kadar daha güzelleşmiyor mu? Göğün derinliği, seni cezbetmiyor mu, Ve aydınlık mavisi? Kendi çehren o sonsuz ıslaklıkta seni içeri çekmiyor mu? Su fışırdamakta, kabarmaktadır, balıkçının ayağı ıslanır, kalbi öyle bir özlem duyar ki, sevgilinin selamını almış gibi. Kadın onunla konuşur ve ona şarkı söyler, ona da olanlar olur. Biraz kadın balıkçıyı çeker, biraz balıkçı batar ve artık görünmez olur.
