Das Wasser rauscht', das Wasser schwoll, Ein Fischer saß daran, Sah nach dem Angel ruhevoll, Kühl bis ans Herz hinan. Und wie er sitzt und wie er lauscht, Theilt sich die Fluth empor; Aus dem bewegten Wasser rauscht Ein feuchtes Weib hervor. [Sie sang zu ihm, sie sprach zu ihm]1: Was lockst du meine Brut Mit Menschenwitz und Menschenlist [Hinauf in]2 Todesgluth? Ach wüßtest du, wie's Fischlein ist So wohlig auf dem Grund, Du stiegst herunter wie du bist Und würdest erst gesund. Labt sich die liebe Sonne nicht, Der Mond sich nicht im Meer? Kehrt wellenathmend ihr Gesicht Nicht doppelt schöner her? Lockt dich der tiefe Himmel nicht, Das feuchtverklärte Blau? Lockt dich dein eigen Angesicht Nicht her in ew'gen Thau? Les aigües fressejaven, les aigües creixien, un pescador seia molt a prop, tranquil, mirant la canya de pescar, impassible fins al fons del cor. I mentre seia i estava a l’aguait, les ones es partiren i de les aigües turbulentes una dona tota molla emergí. Ella li cantà, ella li digué: “Per què atraus la meva mainada amb trucs i argúcies humanes, endalt vers la mort fervent? Ai, si tu sabessis com els peixets viuen feliços a la fondària et submergiries, tal com ets, i d’un cop series guarit. És que l’estimat sol o la lluna no es delecten en el mar? Tot alenant les ones, no retorna el seu rostre doblement més formós? No et sents atret per el cel profund, per el blau humit i transfigurat? No t’atrau el teu propi rostre reflectint-se en la rosada eterna?” Les aigües fressejaven, les aigües creixien i mullaren els seus peus nus; el seu cor s’engrandí ple de desig com per la salutació de l’estimada. Ella li cantà, ella li parlà; llavors tot s’acabà per a ell; en part estirat per ella, en part enfonsant-se ell mateix, mai més no fou vist.
