L'acqua mugghiava, l'acqua si gonfiava, un pescatore stava là, guardava l'amo immobile, freddo fino in fondo al cuore. E come sta fermo e come ascolta, si staglia un'onda verso l'alto: dall'acqua che si agita viene fuori una donna bagnata. Questa canta per lui, questa gli parla: "A che alletti la mia stirpe con umana astuzia e umano inganno, a venire su, verso la morte? Ah, se sapessi come vivono i pesciolini, felici, giù nel fondo, verresti anche tu laggiù, così come sei, e saresti risanato. Non gode forse il sole, non gode la luna nel mare? Non ritorna, respirando le onde, il loro volto due volte più bello? Non ti alletta il cielo profondo, l'umido azzurro trasfigurato? Non ti alletta la tua stessa immagine rilfessa nella rugiada eterna?" L'acqua mugghiava, l'acqua si gonfiava, lui immerge il piede nudo; il suo cuore ardeva di desiderio come per il saluto dell'amata.
