1  Si linguis hominum loquar, et angelorum, 
   caritatem autem non habeam, factus sum velut æs sonans, 
   aut cymbalum tinniens.
 Et si habuero prophetiam, et noverim mysteria omnia, 
   et omnem scientiam: et si habuero omnem fidem ita 
   ut montes transferam, 
   caritatem autem non habuero, nihil sum.
 Et si distribuero in cibos pauperum 
   omnes facultates meas, 
   et si tradidero corpus meum ita ut ardeam, 
   caritatem autem non habuero, nihil mihi prodest.

Videmus nunc per speculum 
   in ænigmate: 
   tunc autem facie ad faciem. 
   Nunc cognosco ex parte: 
   tunc autem cognoscam sicut 
   et cognitus sum.
Nunc autem manent fides, spes, caritas, tria hæc: 
   major autem horum est caritas.

   und hätte der Liebe nicht, 
   so wäre ich ein tönend Erz oder eine klingende Schelle. 
 Und wenn ich weissagen könnte und wüßte alle Geheimnisse 
   und alle Erkenntnis und hätte allen Glauben, 
   also daß ich Berge versetzte, 
   und hätte der Liebe nicht, so wäre ich nichts. 
 Und wenn ich alle meine Habe den Armen gäbe 
   und ließe meinen Leib brennen
   und hätte der Liebe nicht, 
   so wäre mir's nichts nütze. 
 ... 
Wir sehen jetzt durch einen Spiegel 
   in einem dunkeln Worte,
   dann aber von Angesicht zu Angesichte. 
   Jetzt erkenne ich's stückweise;
