Wenn durch die Piazetta
Die Abendluft weht,
Dann weißt du, Ninetta,
Wer wartend hier steht.
Du weißt, wer trotz Schleier
Und Maske dich kennt,
Wie Amor die Venus
Am Nachtfirmament.
Ein Schifferkleid trag' ich
Zur selbigen Zeit,
Und zitternd dir sag' ich:
„Das Boot liegt bereit!
O komm, wo den Mond
Noch Wolken umziehn,
Laß durch die Lagunen,
Mein Leben, uns fliehn!“

When through the piazetta
The evening wind blows,
Then you know, Ninetta,
Who stands here waiting.
You know who, despite veil
And mask, recognizes you
As Amor knows Venus
On the nightly firmament.
I wear the garments of a sailor
At the same time,
And tremblingly I tell you:
"The boat lies ready!
Oh come, where the moon
Is still shrouded in clouds;
Through the lagoons,
My life, let us fly!”
