Es grünt ein Nußbaum vor dem Haus,
Luftig,
Duftig
Breitet er blättrig die Äste aus.
Viel liebliche Blüten stehen dran;
Linde
Winde
Kommen, sie herzlich zu umfahn.
Es flüstern je zwei zu zwei gepaart,
Neigend,
Beugend
Zärtlich zum Kusse die Häuptchen zart.
Sie flüstern von meinem Mägdlein, das
Dächte
Nächte,
Tagelang, wüsste, ach! selber nicht was.
...
Das Mägdlein horcht, es rauscht im Baum;
Sehnend,
Wähnend
Sinkt es lächelnd in Schlaf und Traum.

Er bloeit hier een notenboom voor het huis,
Geurend,
Beurend
Breidt hij zijn blaad'ren en takken uit.
Veel lieflijke bloesems staan er aan;
Milde
Winden
Komen, zij raken hen teder aan.
Zij fluisteren, twee aan twee gerijd,
Nijgend,
Buigend,
Sierlijk, tot kussen elkaar bereid.
Zij fluisteren over'n meisje,
Dat nachten
Lang wachtte
En piekerde, wetend - ach! - zelf niet wat.
...
Het meisje luistert, zacht ruist de boom;
Smachtend,
Wachtend
Vindt zij glimlachend slaap en droom.
