Es grünet ein Nußbaum vor dem Haus,
Luftig,
Duftig
Breitet er blättrig die Äste aus.
Viel liebliche Blüten stehen dran;
Linde
Winde
Kommen, sie herzlich zu umfahn.
Es flüstern je zwei zu zwei gepaart,
Neigend,
Beugend
Zärtlich zum Kusse die Häuptchen zart.
Sie flüstern von meinem Mägdlein, das
Dächte
Nächte,
Tagelang, wüsste, ach! selber nicht was.
...
Das Mägdlein horcht, es rauscht im Baum;
Sehnend,
Wähnend
Sinkt es lächelnd in Schlaf und Traum.

E' tutto verde il noce davanti alla casa,
profuma,
nell'aria,
e, attorno, allarga la sua chioma frondosa.
Di fiori delicati è tutto ricoperto,
Leggere
Brezze
Li accarezzano con tenero affetto.
Sussurrano i fiori, a due a due accoppiati,
piegando,
leggiadri,
ai baci del vento, i piccoli capi.
Sussurrano di una fanciulla che stava
pensosa,
di notte
di giorno, senza sapere che cosa.
...
Ascolta la fanciulla, stormisce la pianta;
con desiderio
e speranza
lei sogna e sorride, e poi si addormenta.
