Zu Straßburg auf der Schanz,
Da ging mein Trauern an,
Das Alphorn hört' ich drüben wohl anstimmen,
Ins Vaterland mußt ich hinüber schwimmen,
Das ging ja nicht an.
Ein Stund' in der Nacht
Sie haben mich gebracht;
Sie führten mich gleich vor des Hauptmanns Haus,
Ach Gott, sie fischten mich im Strome auf,
Mit mir ist es aus.
Früh Morgens um zehn Uhr
Stellt man mich vor's Regiment;
Ich soll da bitten um Pardon,
Und ich bekomm doch meinen Lohn,
Das weiß ich schon.
Ihr Brüder allzumal,
Heut' seht ihr mich zum letztenmal;
Der Hirtenbub ist nur Schuld daran,

In Straatsburg op de schans,
Daar ving mijn treuren aan;
De alpenhoorn hoord’ ik boven mooi aanstemmen,
Naar ‘t vaderland moest ik wel overzwemmen,
Maar dat zou niet gaan.
Om één uur des nachts
Heeft men mij opgebracht;
Ze voerden mij recht naar de schout zijn huis,
Ach God, ze visten uit de stroom mij op,
Met mij is het uit.
Vroeg, ‘s morgens om tien uur
Stond ‘k al vóór het regiment;
Ik moest daar smeken om pardon,
En ik ontkom niet aan mijn val,
Dat weet ik al.
Mijn broeders allemaal,
Je ziet mij voor de laatste maal;
De herdersknaap heeft slechts schuld daaraan,
Zijn hoorn heeft mij het aangedaan,
