O Mutter, der junge Prinz ist an unsrer Türe vorüberkommen,
Und die Morgensonne blitzte auf an seinem Wagen.
Ich strich den Schleier aus meinem Gesicht,
Riß die Rubinenkette von meinem Halse und warf sie ihm in den Weg.
Warum schaust du mich so verwundert an, Mutter?
Ich weiß wohl, daß er meine Kette nicht aufhob.
Ich weiß, sie ward unter den Rädern zermalmt
Und ließ eine rote Spur im Staube zurück.
Und niemand weiß, was mein Geschenk war, noch wem es galt.
Aber der junge Prinz kam an unsrer Tür vorüber
Und ich habe ihm den Schmuck von meiner Brust
 ...  in den Weg geworfen.

È passato davanti alla nostra porta,
e il sole mattutino brillava sul suo carro.
Mi sono tolta il velo dal volto,
ho strappato la collana di rubini dal mio collo
e la ho gettata verso di lui sulla strada.
Perché, madre, mi guardi con tanto stupore?
So bene, che non ha raccolto la mia collana.
So che questa fu sbriciolata sotto le ruote
Lasciando una rossa scia nella polvere.
E nessuno sa quale è stato il mio dono, e chi lo ha fatto.
Ma il giovane principe è passato davanti alla nostra porta
Ed io ho strappato il gioiello dal mio petto
Per gettarlo sulla sua strada.
