Dämmrung senkte sich von oben,
Schon ist alle Nähe fern;
Doch zuerst emporgehoben
Holden Lichts der Abendstern!
Alles schwankt in's Ungewisse,
Nebel schleichen in die Höh';
Schwarzvertiefte Finsternisse
Widerspiegelnd ruht der See.

Dort, am östlichen Bereiche
Ahn' ich Mondenglanz und Gluth,
Schlanker Weiden Haargezweige
Scherzen auf der nächsten Fluth.
Durch bewegter Schatten Spiele
Zittert Luna's Zauberschein,
Und durch's Auge schleicht die Kühle
Sänftigend in's Herz hinein.

Déjà les alentours sont loin,
Et pourtant, la première, là-haut s'allume
La belle lumière de l'étoile du soir.
Tout bascule dans l'incertain,
Le brouillard s'insinue dans les hauteurs,
Une noire et profonde obscurité
Se reflète sur le lac tranquille.

Là-bas, du côté de l'est
Je pressens la lueur claire de la lune,
Des rameaux de saule, fins comme des cheveux
Jouent à côté, sur l'onde.
À travers le jeu mouvant des ombres
La lueur ensorcelée de la lune tremble,
Et par les yeux s'insinue le froid,
Apaisant, jusqu'au fond du cœur.
