Es treibt mich hin, es treibt mich her
 (Sung text for setting by R. Franz)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  CAT DUT ENG FRE ITA
Es treibt mich hin, es treibt mich her!
Noch wenige Stunden, dann soll ich sie schauen,
sie selber, die schönste der schönen Jungfrauen; -
du treues Herz, was pochst du so schwer!

Die Stunden sind aber ein faules Volk!
Schleppen sich hin behaglich träge,
schleichen gähnend ihre Wege; -
tummle dich, du faules Volk!

Tobende Eile mich treibend erfaßt!
Aber wohl niemals liebten die Horen; -
heimlich zum grausamen Bunde verschworen,
spotten sie tückisch der Liebenden Hast.

Composition:

    Set to music by Robert Franz (1815 - 1892), "Es treibt mich hin, es treibt mich her", op. 34 no. 4 (1861?), published 1861 [ voice and piano ], Breslau, Leuckart

Je déambule, de‑ci de‑là !
 (Sung text translation for setting by R. Franz)
 See original
Language: French (Français)  after the German (Deutsch)
Je déambule, de‑ci de‑là !
Encore quelques heures et je pourrai la regarder,
Elle, la plus belle des belles jeunes filles ;
Toi, cœur fidèle, pourquoi bats‑tu si fort !

Mais les heures sont paresseuses !
Elles se traînent confortablement, indolentes,
Elles rampent en baillant sur leur chemin ;
Dépêchez‑vous, paresseuses !

Une furieuse hâte me saisit et me pousse
Mais, sûr, les heures n'ont jamais aimé ;
Liées par un secret et cruel serment,
Traîtreusement, elles se moquent de la hâte amoureuse.
