Mein Lieb ist eine rothe Ros',
Die frisch am Stocke glüht;
und eine rothe Ros', mein Lieb,
Ist wie ein süßes Lied!
Mein Lieb, so schmuck und schön du bist,
So sehr auch lieb' ich dich;
Bis daß die See verlaufen ist,
mein Mädchen, lieb' ich dich!
Bis daß die See verlaufen ist,
... der Fels zerschmilzt, mein Kind,
und immerdar so lang mein Blut
In meinen Adern rinnt!
Leb' wohl, leb' wohl, mein einzig Lieb!
Leb' wohl auf kurze Zeit!
Ich kehr' zurück und wär' ich auch
Zehntausend Meilen weit!
Note for stanza 2, line 4: in Scholz's setting, the line becomes "Du süße Dirne, lieb' ich dich!" in the repetition.
Composition:
Set to music by Ferdinand Gumbert (1818 - 1896), "Mein Lieb ist eine rothe Ros'", op. 65 no. 5, published 1854 [ soprano or tenor and piano ], Leipzig, Siegel

My love is a red rose
That glows dewily upon the bush;
and a red rose, my love,
Is like a sweet song!
My love, as picture-perfect and beautiful you are,
So much do I love you;
Until the sea has drained,
My maiden, I shall love you!
Until the sea has drained,
the rock dissolved, my child,
And evermore as long as my blood
Courses through my veins!
Farewell, farewell, my only love!
Farewell for a short time!
I shall come back even though I were
Ten thousand miles away!
