Hier möcht ich Stunden, Tage, Wochen viel
Verträumen und verschlendern ohne Ziel.

Hier möcht ich sorgenlos an schöner Brust
Vertändeln einer leichten Liebe Lust.

Hier möcht ich bleiben - wäre drüben nicht
Ostwärts die freie Luft so seltsam licht.

Dort weiß ich warten zauberhaft und hell
Mein Ziel - Venedig! Und ich reise schnell.

Padua

Almost a German city, so closely built,
Streets and rooftops duskily near each other.

Here I would like to dream and meander away
Many hours, days, weeks, with no goal.

Here I would like to dally without care
Upon a lovely breast in the light joy of love.

Here I would want to stay - if over yonder,
Eastward, the free air were not so curiously luminous.

There, I know, waits, magical and bright
My goal - Venice! And I travel quickly.
