Schau! Im zweifelhaften Dunkel
Glühen blühend alle Zweige,
Nieder spielt Stern auf Stern;
Und smaragden durchs Gesträuche
Tausendfältiger Karfunkel:
Doch dein Geist ist allem fern.
  "Ich will küssen! Küssen! sagt ich."

Dein Geliebter, fern, erprobet
Gleicherweis im Sauersüßen,
Fühlt ein unglückselges Glück.
Euch im Vollmond zu begrüßen,
Habt ihr heilig angelobet;
Dieses ist der Augenblick.

Pourquoi ce léger tremblement de tes lèvres ?
Un murmure  sort toujours de toi,
Plus agréable que des gorgées de vin !
Penses-tu que tes lèvres jumelles
Attirent une autre paire ?
  « Je veux un baiser ! un baiser ! j'ai dit. »

Regarde ! Dans l'obscurité douteuse
Brillent toutes les branches en fleur,
Les étoiles, l'une après l'autre, jouent à descendre ;
Et à travers les buissons couleur d'émeraude,
Mille escarboucles jaillissent :
Mais ton esprit est loin de tout.
  « Je veux un baiser ! un baiser ! j'ai dit. »

Ton amant, au loin, éprouvé
Également dans l'amertume,
Ressent un bonheur infortuné.
Dans la pleine lune de vous saluer
Vous avez fait la promesse sainte.
