Je mehr ich sie rufe, Je schneller der Lauf, Wenn ein Hauch sie entführet, Wer hielte sie auf? Der Hauch meiner Klagen Die Segel nur schwillt, Je mehr mein Verlangen Zurücke sie hält! Verhielt' ich die Klagen: Es löst' sie der Schmerz, Und Klagen und Schweigen Zersprengt mir das Herz. Ich rufe vom Ufer Verlorenes Glück, Die Ruder nur schallen Zum Strande zurück. Ik roep van de oever Verloren geluk, De riemen slechts kaatsen Naar ‘t strand nog terug. Van ‘t strand af, o moeder, Waar de golfslag op slaat, Daar varen de schepen, Waar mijn liefste op staat. Hoe meer ik hen terugroep, Hoe meer hun galop; Als een zucht hen al wegdrijft, Wie houdt hen dan op? ‘t Gezucht van mijn klagen Bolt enkel het zeil, Hoe meer mijn verlangen Hen remt in hun ijl! Weerhield ik mijn klachten, ‘t Verdriet liet hen gaan, En ‘t klagen en zwijgen Verziekt mijn bestaan. Ik roep van de oever Verloren geluk, De riemen slechts kaatsen Naar ‘t strand nog terug.
