Da [lag ich in Windeln als Kind darein?]1
Da lag ich [gebrechlich, hülflos]2 und stumm,
Und zog nur zum Weinen die Lippen krumm.

Ich konnte nichts fassen mit Händchen zart,
Und war doch gebunden nach [Schelmenart]3;
Ich hatte Füßchen, und lag doch wie lahm,
Bis Mutter an ihre Brust mich nahm.

Dann [lachte ich saugend]4 zu ihr empor,
Sie sang mir von Rosen und Engeln vor.
Sie sang und sie wiegte mich singend in Ruh',
Und küßte mir liebend die Augen zu.

Sie spannte aus [Seide gar dämmerig-grün,
Ein kühliges Zelt hoch über mich hin;]5

Al meu bressol

Això doncs, això és l’estreta arquella
on fa molt temps jeia quan era infant,
llavors era fràgil, indefens i mut
i només torçava la boca per plorar.

No podia agafar res amb les meves delicades manetes
i per tant estava lligat com un pillet;
tenia peuets però jeia com un tolit
fins que la mare em prenia al seu pit.

Llavors li somreia tot mamant,
ella em cantava cançons de roses i àngels,
cantant, em bressolava per fer-me adormir
i, amb amor, em besava els ulls.

Ella estenia una tela de seda de color verd fosc,
un frescós cobert al meu damunt.
On podria retrobar un indret així de tranquil?
Potser quan l’herba verda serà el meu sostre!

Oh mare, estimada; mare, resta encara aquí llarga estona!
Qui, confortant, em cantarà cançons d’àngels?
Qui, amb amor, em besarà els ulls
per al llarg, darrer i profund repòs?
