chè troppo agli orbi il suo splendor s'accese:
Biasmar si può più 'l popol che 'l offese,
c'al suo men pregio ogni maggior salire.
Questo discese a' merti del fallire,
per l'util nostro, e poi a Dio ascese:
E le porte che 'l ciel non gli contese,
la patria chiuse al suo guisto desire.
Ingrata, dico, e della suo fortuna
a suo danno nutrice; ond' è ben segnio,
c' a' più perfetti abonda di più guai.
Fra mille altre ragion sol ha quest' una:
Se par non ebbe il suo esilio indegnio,
simil uom nè maggior non naqque mai.

Tot el que es podria dir d’ell, no es pot dir,
car prou que la seva esplendor enlluerna els nostres ulls:
es pot més aviat blasmar el poble que l’ofengué,
i menys a tots els més grans de voler assolir la seva menor virtut.
Per al nostre bé, ell davallà fins als que mereixien
llur malguany i després s’enlairà vers Déu:
i les portes que el cel no li barrà,
la pàtria les hi tancà als seus justos anhels.
Ingrata, dic, és la fortuna que es nodreix
en el seu dany; un bon senyal
que ella farceix d’infortunis als més perfectes.
Entre mil altres raons, n’hi ha prou només amb una:
si cap exili fou mai més indigne que el seu,
cap home igual o més gran que ell ha mai nascut.
